Dry Matter (DM) represents the feed weight minus all moisture, which is the baseline for nutritional requirements. As-Fed weight represents the actual weight of the feed as it is fed to the animal (including moisture). Because fresh pasture or silage has high water content, the As-Fed weight you need to purchase and feed is always higher than the DM requirement.

Ruminants need fiber to stimulate chewing and saliva production, which acts as a natural buffer in the rumen. If they eat too much grain/concentrates and too little fodder, the rumen pH drops rapidly, causing a dangerous metabolic condition called Acidosis, which can lead to severe illness or death.
