Electricity & Fuel Calculations

Household carbon conversion metrics are computed using baseline utility coefficients:

  • Electricity Formula: (Monthly Bill / Average rate per kWh) × 0.37 kg CO2 × 12 months. Assumes standard US/global retail utility cost and grid carbon intensity.
  • Fuel Formula: (Monthly Fuel Cost / Average fuel price per gallon) × 8.8 kg CO2 × 12 months. Gasoline burns at roughly 8.8 kg CO2 equivalent per gallon.
  • Trees Equivalent: Every ton of CO2 requires roughly 45 mature trees to absorb and offset from the atmosphere annually.

Switching to high-efficiency or electric solutions dramatically lowers household emissions:

  • Solar Transition: Offsetting grid electricity with residential solar panels drops your home's direct electricity carbon footprint to zero.
  • EV Adoption: Swapping a combustion engine vehicle for an Electric Vehicle (EV) reduces your travel footprint by 70%, even on fossil-mixed grids.
  • Efficiency Upgrades: Upgrading to heat pumps for heating/cooling and LED lighting yields huge annual utility bill and emissions savings.

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our individual actions. The global average carbon footprint is about 4 to 5 tons of CO2 per person annually. To avoid a 2°C rise in global temperatures, the target average footprint needs to drop to under 2 tons per person by 2050.

Electricity emissions are computed based on your home consumption (in kWh) multiplied by the regional grid carbon intensity factor. Coal-heavy grids have high carbon intensities (~0.9 kg CO2/kWh), while grids with solar, hydro, wind, or nuclear power have much lower intensities (~0.1 kg CO2/kWh). The calculator uses a standard average US/global grid factor of 0.37 kg CO2 per kWh.

Burning aviation fuel at high altitudes releases CO2 and other greenhouse pollutants directly into the upper atmosphere, compounding their warming effect. Commercial flights generate roughly 90 kg (0.09 tons) of CO2 per passenger hour. A single long-haul return flight can easily exceed an individual's target annual carbon budget.

You can reduce your footprint by making lifestyle adjustments (e.g. insulating your home to reduce heating loads, walking or cycling instead of driving, eating a plant-rich diet). To offset unavoidable emissions, you can support certified carbon offset programs (such as tree-planting projects, methane-capture initiatives, or local renewable energy developments).
